According to the Global Liveability Ranking Index of The Economist Intelligence Unit, Melbourne is the most liveable city in the world. This is the six year in which Melbourne was awarded the amazing recognition. The award is offered after ranking lifestyle factors in 140 cities all across the world. The capital of the war-ravaged nation Syria, Damascus, was named the least liveable city in the world below Tripoli, Libya. The top five cities are unchanged but the past year has been increasingly unstable for many parts of the world and has caused trouble in many cities.
The index ranks the lifestyles of these cities’ residents with factors such as environment, culture, infrastructure, education, healthcare and stability. Out of 100 points, Melbourne scored 97.5 which is just one point ahead of Vienna in Austria, the second most liveable city in the world. . According to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, the most liveable city title is something of great pride to all Melbourne residents. “We do not take this title for granted and are constantly planning and implementing policies that will continue to improve our quality of life”, he added.
While Melbourne topped the list, three other Australian cities also made it to the top 10 liveable cities list. Adelaide made it to the 5th place with equal points as Calgary, Canada while Perth is positioned at seventh place. Sydney moved from the seventh position to move out of the top 10 cities due to a heightened perceived threat of terrorism. This is the first time since 2007 in which Sydney failed to earn a position in the top 10 most liveable cities list.
